Biography

Ms Crean is an Accounting lecturer. She obtained a degree in Accounting and Finance and a first class Masters in Accounting from Dublin City University. She is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and prior to joining University of Galway Ms Crean worked as an audit trainee at KPMG in Dublin, while obtaining her profession accounting qualification. She then spent some time working in corporate finance in a practice role and as a financial accountant in an industry role.  

Andrea lectures in Financial Accounting and Auditing at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the School of Business & Economics and is also involved in the management and co-ordination of the KPMG Summer School, run for both Masters groups, the Masters in Accounting and Masters in International Accounting and Analytics.

Andrea is currently pursuing her PhD in the area of Innovation of auditing through the use of Big Data and Data Analytics and has recently attended and presented her work to date at doctoral symposiums, including the IAFA (Irish Accounting and Finance Association) symposium in May 2019, September 2020, May 2021 and June 2023 and the EARNet (European Auditing Research Network) symposium in Parma, Italy in September 2019 and September 2021. Andrea received a doctoral scholarship to attend and present a research submission at the European Accounting Association (EAA) Annual PhD forum in Bucharest, Romania in May 2021. Andrea is attending the European Accounting Research (EAA) Annual Symposium in Bucharest, Romania in May 2024 to present her paper, co-authored with Dr Emer Curtis entitled 'Negotiating the Boundaries between audit and data analytics'.




Research Interests

Andrea’s research interests are in the area of innovation of auditing through the use of data analytics. She is currently undertaking a PhD which examines the innovations of audit processes and audit methodologies through the use of Big Data and Data Analytics. She is focussing on how institutional theory helps to understand the conflicting roles and relationships at play within the institutional environment of auditing and to explore the practical and institutional challenges of implementing Big Data Analytics in the audit process.

Andrea has attended and presented her work to date at doctoral symposiums, including the IAFA (Irish Accounting and Finance Association) symposium at Dublin City University in May 2019 and virtually in September 2020 and May 2021 and presented at the EARNet (European Auditing Research Network) symposium in Parma, Italy in September 2019. Andrea has also recently submitted a research paper to the European Accounting Association PhD Forum to present virtually in May 2021 and will present at the EARNet symposium in Amsterdam in September 2021.

Other Activities

  Description

Developing relationships between the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics and a number of international employers via programme development as Programme Director on the MSc in International Accounting and Analytics (Pathway A and Pathway B). Through this programme, a range of guest speakers from practice (companies including KPMG, PwC, Ernst and Young and Deloitte) and industry (companies including Medtronic, Hewlett Packard, NTR Plc) present guest lectures to NUI Galway students.

Teaching Interests

Andrea's main teaching interests lie in the areas of Financial Reporting and Auditing. She has recently completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Andrea also has a strong interest in analytics and is heavily involved in the management of and input into the KPMG-led Summer School in auditing and accounting analytics which is delivered by KPMG to both Masters groups at University of Galway (Masters in Accounting and MSc in International Accounting and Analytics); Andrea manages the programme internally and is involved in designing the format of the module and incorporating analytics to all elements of learning and assessment. 

There is a need to build research expertise and to develop an international research network in the area of analytics, to support research-led teaching on University of Galways Masters programmes. Andrea's PhD work in the area of audit and analytics is contributing significantly in this area, enabling research-led teaching.
